Monroe County
The Tennessee Overhill offers its visitors
rivers to follow and trails to explore in the Cherokee National
Forest while museums, historic sites and reenactments spin
tales of Cherokee Indians, fur traders, miners, railroaders
and farmers. Experience the Monroe County region's best as
you travel national scenic byways surrounded by streams, mountains,
forests and the small towns of McMinn, Monroe and Polk counties.
The Furs to Factories Heritage Trail and the Agriculture Trail
offer unique ways to experience the Monroe County region.
Drive through the clouds on the
Cherohala Skyway, the newest National forest Scenic Byway.
The Cherokee National Forest and Tellico River provide the
perfect playground for fishing, birding, camping and great
kayaking. In the towns and mountain communities you'll find
places to buy handmade crafts and antiques and get a good
meal. Discover the history and culture of the Monroe County
region at Fort Loudoun State Park where reenactments add to
museum exhibits of this reconstructed 1756 British fort. Tour
Sequoyah Birthplace Museum and experience the history of the
