The American Museum of Science & Energy is one of the foremost science museum in the country dedicated to explaining and demonstrating the benefits and many peaceful uses of atomic energy. Located in Oak Ridge, TN, it was originally named the American Museum of Atomic Energy. The museum opened in 1949 in a restored wartime cafeteria. The new facility, opened in 1975, now contains exhibits about alternative energy uses as well. The museum also offers educational opportunities, materials and resources for students. The museum also features an exhibit about the history of the Manhattan Project. The American Museum of Atomic Energy changes its names to the American Museum of Science and Energy (AMSE) in 1978.
American Museum of Science & Energy Operating Hours
The Museum is open for visitors Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum is open everyday except Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day and New Year's Day. The Discovery Shop is open Monday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and in Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
American Museum of Science & Energy Fees
Admission to the AMSE is as follows: adults, $5; seniors and children ages 6 to 17, $4; and children under five, FREE. Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more. AMSE honors admission for members of the Association of Science Technology Centers Passport Program and is a Smithsonian Institution Affiliate Program member.
